SERVPRO, Your Clean Ducts Specialists

5/10/2022 (Permalink)

picture of a very dirty duct vent How's Your Indoor Air Quality?

Looks like high temperatures have arrived early this year, and when it gets near 90 degrees we tend to keep the doors and windows to our homes and businesses shut tight to keep the hot weather outside. This also keeps the air trapped inside and recirculating through the building. Without regular maintenance and cleaning, ductwork can become dusty and dirty especially if there is neglect in routine filter replacements. This will cause foul odors, dust, mold, and other contaminants to be circulated around the building which will result in poor air quality in your home or business.

Cleaning the ductwork helps to improve the air quality and gain energy efficiency. Odors will be less noticeable and the potential for mold growth will be reduced. This can also help to remedy any bacteria, fugus, or mold that may be in the ductwork.

Does your ductwork need cleaned? SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy can help! Contact our team at 618-667-8648 today to schedule having your ducts cleaned.

SMOKE DAMAGED INSULATION? NO PROBLEM!

SMOKE DAMAGED INSULATION? WE CAN REMEDY THAT!

SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy understands the need to remove all damaged materials from your home or business to make sure there is no lingering effects from a fire damage. One of those materials is your insulation. Insulation is very porous and absorbent which will trap odors like smoke in the material. SERVPRO has various ways of removing insulation based on what type (rolled or blown in) insulation it is. We make sure we remove all materials that could cause odor problems.

Smoke and Soot Facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke:

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

STEPS YOU SHOULD TAKE IN THE EVENT OF A PIPE BURST

5/10/2022 (Permalink)

a lady holding an umbrella with water falling Water Damage have you breaking out the unbrella? Call SERVPRO

What should you do in the event of a pipe burst in your home or business?

Cracked, broken or bursting pipes can cause a lot of damage to your home or business. Because of this, its very important to have the problem taken care of as quickly as possible to minimize secondary damage. It can be difficult to determine what to do in a high-stress situation like this, but the following steps will put you on the right path until SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy arrives.

1. Contact Your Insurance Company

One of the first things you want to do when you've experienced water to your home or business is to call your insurance agent. This will allow you to get the claims process started right away. It can be a lengthy process and the money you receive can help you pay to fix broken pipes and have repairs done. Your claim can also be denied if you take too long to report the damage.

2. Locate and Document Damage

When you make an insurance claim, an adjuster will need to inspect your home to determine the extent of the damage. While you are waiting for the visit, you can start making a list and taking pictures of damaged areas and belongings. The adjuster can use this information when working on your claim. Do not throw away affected items until you have documented and inventoried them, as these can provide proof of damage as well.

3. Have Mitigation Done

A busted water line can result in flooding in your home or business and, if it is not cleaned up quickly, it can lead to a lot of secondary damage. When exposed to moisture, mold can begin to grow in as little as a day and can easily spread to large areas. Excessive water can also absorb into building materials which will then need to be replaced if you delay in mitigating the damage.
If your home or business has been damaged as a result of a busted pipe, a cleanup and restoration service like SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy can perform mitigation quickly to minimize further damage. They can also make any necessary repairs and salvage many of your affected belongings to have your home looking as good as new.

Water damage have you all wet? Call SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy at (618) 667-8648.

2022 Winter Weather Can Bring Frozen Pipes!

1/5/2022 (Permalink)

A frozen pipe that burst in freezing tempuratures with the SERVPRO Logo and the words "Frozen Pipes Frozen Pipes

Now that January is in full swing in the metro-east Illinois region for 2022 we can see by the thermometer that the tempuratures are falling dramatically. Water damage calls from frozen pipes really pick up in the Madison and St. Clair County regions when the mercury drops! When pipes freeze over, they expand and burst to a major water damage in your place of business.

Here are some great tips to help prevent frozen pipes:

Let your faucets to drip when the weather has extremely cold tempuratures. Letting a very small amount of water flow through pipes at all times during extreme cold weather spells can do a lot to prevent pipes from freezing. A steady drip is all that is needed to keep the pipes free from ice accumulation.

Many pipes do not have proper insulation or may be adjacent to an exterior wall that can cause them to freeze in cold weather. Pipe sleeves and heating tape can be applied to insulate these pipes. It is also a good precautionary measure to caulk around gaps where cold drafts can affect pipe temperatures.

Shut off any outside water sources that you don't need, especially if you are expecting particularly low temperatures. When a building is left unattended, make sure the thermostat is set no lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

Open cabinet doors under sinks and in storage areas to allow heat from the room to circulate around uninsulated pipes in cold rooms.

Dealing with frozen pipes

Hairdryer – This is one of the safest and most effective ways to thaw a pipe. Open the faucet and then heat the pipe by working back toward the area where the blockage has occurred.

Space heater – A small heater can work much faster than a hairdryer. Simply direct the heater toward the frozen area of the pipe but use caution when utilzing a space heater. Don't leave it unattended.

Make sure you and your employees know where the shut-off valve is located. If you are dealing with frozen pipes or water damage from frozen pipes in your commercial building call TEAM WOLFE at (618) 667-8648 as soon as possible to minimize secondary damage.

Winter Storm Preparedness is Essential

1/5/2022 (Permalink)

A man bundled up during a heavy snowfall along with the SERVPRO logo Winter Storm Preparedness

The metro-east Illinois region is experiencing some extremely cold tempuratures with bad weather heading this way. Hopefully, businesses and homeowners have put a plan in place in the event of a major winter storm which is bound to happen. However, the middle of a blizzard or major snowstorm is not the time to wonder when your heating system was last serviced. By taking action now, you can head into the winter season comfortable in the knowledge that your home or business will be safe in the event of severe winter weather.

Before those nightly temperatures plummet, you’ll want to take preventative measures to keep your pipes from freezing, and help your home and business to retain heat by weather-stripping doors and windowsills and replacing your heating system’s filters and have your HVAC system checked before it fails you during a long strectch of winter weather. You might consider buying emergency heating equipment (and fuel) or a portable backup generator in the event of a magor snow/ice storm that could potentially knock out power. Also make sure your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detectors are in good working order! And in case you’re unable to leave your home for a prolonged amount of time due to weather conditions, having a stock of non-perishable food items on hand is always a great idea.

Try to avaoid venturing out into hazardous road conditions during a major winter storm, and in the event that you’re caught traveling or need to evacuate an area when a storm strikes, you also want to be sure your vehicle is winter-ready. The American Red Cross recommends having a maintenance check and tire evaluation in autumn so that any necessary maintenance can be completed before winter arrives, and having an emergency road kit with the following provisions: a windshield scraper, a small sack of sand (for generating traction), shovel, matches in a waterproof container, tire chains or traction mats, a bright red cloth to tie to your antenna, warm clothing, blankets, bottled water and snack foods, and a battery-powered radio.

Does Your Place of Business Need Its Carpets Cleaned?

12/30/2021 (Permalink)

a carpet extractor being used on carpet along with the SERVPRO LOGO Freshly Cleaned Carpet!

How Does Your St. Clair County Commercial Carpets look?

Are you sending a bad message to your customers in the Metro-East Illinois region by having unsightly commercial carpets at you place of business?

The average lifespan of commercial carpeting ranges anywhere from three years to ten years based on the quality of material. Replacing carpeting can be a costly indeavor and is a significant investment, so if you’re a business owner with carpeting you want your customers to be impressed when they walk into your business which is hard to do when your carpet has been neglected. As a business owner you're probably interested in seeing that carpet last closer to ten years too so rather than having to replace it it may be advantagous to have SERVPRO routinely clean your carpets to make them last.

Because carpet is a soft surface that can trap dirt, debri, dander and bacteria, carpet maintenance is about more than just appearances, it’s also about the health of your employees and customers.

According to the International Sanitary Supply Association, one square yard of commercial carpet can accumulate up to a pound of dirt in just one week’s time, and up to twice that much during inclement weather. Dirt isn’t the only thing lurking between those carpet fibers. Dead skin cells, dust mites, bacteria, and pollen grains are also frequent offenders, and if your business is pet-friendly, pet hair and urine will also be a common culprit. Any and all of these particles can become airborne when disturbed, and agitate individuals with asthma or allergies.

Why does you business really need professional cleaning? Isn’t vacuuming sufficient?” While studies do show that frequent vacuuming can significantly lower allergens in carpet generally speaking, a standard vacuum just isn’t able to get deeply embedded dirt and particles. In fact, most carpet warranties require you to have a professional carpet cleaning every twelve to eighteen months. That’s where SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy come in.

TEAM WOLFE offers a wide range of carpet cleaning methods with the use of specialized cleaners and processes to help your commercial carpet last longer and protect the health of your customers and employees. For more info on our carpet cleaning services, give our office a call at (618) 667-8648.

Smoke & Soot After a Fire

After fire damages your home or business, smoke & soot will be present throughout the structure and affects everything from ceiling tiles to HVAC/Ventilation systems, etc., posing a threat to your health and to the contents within the structure. Learn more about the Fire Damage Restoration process.

Smoke & Soot from Fire, What Should You Know About It

Smoke/Soot damage is tiny carbon particles created by incomplete combustion of fossil fuels (wood, oil, coal, etc.). Smoke/Soot contains lots of acids, as well as chemicals, metals, soils, and dust. These particles leave a charred residue and a pungent foul smell on everything it comes in contact with.

During a fire, smoke and/or soot spreads to throughout the entire structure, attacking surfaces and you contents within the structure. This acidic film will cause secondary damage your home your contents and indoor air quality if it is not remediated by a professional immediately.

Soot can inhabit your home even if there wasn’t a fire such as the case with excessive candle burning. Excessive candle usage can lead to soot buildup especially on your ceilings, so make sure to use them carefully as they are a leading cvause of fires. Fireplaces can release soot as well if they’re not properly ventilated. Furnaces are also a source of soot contamination when a defective operating system is in operation.

The dangers of soot exposure:

Data shows that soot exposure leads to around 20,000 deaths in the U.S. each year. Soot-related diseases are the culprit of many of them. Moreover, soot exposure causes 300,000 asthma attacks and two million lost workdays annually due to respiratory problems.

Soot can enter your body through inhalation, ingestion or via the skin and eyes. These toxic particles can cause many breathing problems, including asthma, bronchitis, coronary heart disease, and even cancer. Infants, the elderly, and those who already have breathing problems are the most affected by these contaminates.

To avoid the health risks of soot exposure after a home fire, make sure that all soot-affected areas are properly cleaned and sanitized by a SERVPRO professional.

How to clean up soot

Your home or business likely holds many chemicals, such as plastics, foams, carpets, wood products, and synthetic fabrics. Soot derived from these materials leads to health hazards that make fire restoration a dangerous and difficult process to remedy. That's why it's always best to call professioinals like SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy! We have the specialized training, PPE and resources to properly remediate Smoke and Soot from your property. Personal protective equipment (PPE) refers to protective clothing, helmets, gloves, face shields, goggles, facemasks and/or respirators or other equipment designed to protect the wearer from injury and/or hazardous materials.

A dust mask and a household cleaner are not enough to clean up soot! Removing soot thoroughly requires professional tools, knowledge, and expertise. SERVPRO can properly clean soot and odors from your entire home or business to ensure its safe.

For professional smoke/soot remediation or fire damage repair, contact SERVPRO at (618) 667-8648.

When it comes to commercial fires in the metroeast region, there can always be a risk of a fire from office buildings to restaurants to factory warehouses. Especially, with the cold weather season gearing up. These types of facilities and structures have not had their heating systems turned on all year long and we all know that the winter months tent to yeld more fire related catastrophes. Don't Wait for An Adjuster to Arrive before Dealing with Storm Damage

3/9/2021 (Permalink)

A man sleeping on a table with his head down waiting for a call Don't Wait For an Adjuster

Don't Wait For a Property  Adjuster to Arrive After a Storm Damages Your Property!

With Spring just a few weeks away, the potential of heavy storms can start to form in the metro-east Illinois region. With that elevated risk of a major storm sweeping through the St. Clair or Madison County region, your home or business can experience wind, hail or water damage that will require immediate building stabilization to reduce the affects of secondary damage. By waiting for adjuster to arrive onsite which could takes days if the region received widespread storm damage, you might think it's to just wait for an adjuster to arrive to make any major decisions. However, this might not be the best decision. Here are just a few reasons why.

1. You May Be Waiting Several Days Before an Adjuster can inspect You Property

During a large storm or a disaster, there will likely be many people who have suffered major storm damage to their homes or businesses. Because of this, it might take a while before an adjuster is able to get to you. There will be quite a few people who are in the same situation that you are, so waiting around while your property is wet and/or exposed can create additional secondary damages that will escalate the cost of repairing it back to preloss condition.

2. Water Damage Only Gets Worse by procrastination

While you are waiting for an adjuster to arrive, the water will continue to affect your house and belongings. If the water is not removed and your property stays wet, you will end up with a much larger problem to deal with. When it is exposed to water for long periods of time, wood can begin to warp and may end up rotting which can affect the structure of the building. Mold damage can occur quickly as well and may begin to spread within 24 hours.

3. It Can Affect Your Insurance Claim by Thousands of Additional Dollars by Waiting

In some cases, doing nothing to prevent further damage can affect the results of your storm insurance claim. You might not be approved for as much as you would have otherwise, and your claim might be denied altogether. Paying for repairs on your own can be expensive, so you want to avoid this if possible.
Instead of waiting for your insurance adjuster, the best thing to do after a storm is to document the damage. Take pictures and make lists of affected areas and items to provide as evidence. Once this has been done, a cleanup and restoration service like SERVPRO can begin mitigation to prevent the damage from worsening while you wait to file your claim.

Call SERVPRO of Effingham, Mattoon, Charleston for all your Spring Storm cleanup & restoration problems at (618) 667-8648. We promise to make them disappear "Like it never even happened."

Freezing Temperatures Can Cause Pipes to Burst

2/18/2021 (Permalink)

A frozen pipe that burst from the cold Pipe Burst

Baby it's Cold Outside!

With the freezing temperatures we are experiencing, it's vital that you know how to prevent pipes from freezing. When water freezes in your pipes, whether due to quick drops in outside temperatures, poor insulation or the thermostat set too low, its volume expands and puts pressure on the pipe from inside. This can cause a burst pipe, but even a small crack or two can be the start of some devastating and expensive water and plumbing damage that would require a professional restoration company like SERVPRO to repair the damage.

Here's a Few Tips To Prevent You From Having to Call us:

Here are just a few tips that you can perform to reduce the chances of you having to give us a call:
• Insulate pipes located in the attic and crawl space using pipe insulation, even if the climate where you live does not often have hard freeze conditions.
• You can also wrap pipes in heat tape or heat cables with a thermostat control. The best pipe insulation for your situation will depend on your home. Always install according to the manufacturer's directions.
• Seal or caulk any cracks that might let in cold air, especially places where pipes run from inside to outside the home, such as dryer vents or water pipes.
• Preventing frozen pipes should be done outdoors as well. As you winterize your home, disconnect your garden hoses.
For any outdoor faucets with cut-off valves, be sure they are closed and faucets are drained. You can also protect them by using faucet covers throughout the winter months.
• If cold weather settles in and you notice temperatures beginning to drop, start a small drip of both hot water and cold water in the kitchen, bath, laundry areas and any other faucets in the home. A small water drip is all that is needed to keep water moving through the system and prevent frozen pipes.
• Be sure to alert a trusted neighbor if you'll be away more than a few days, and ask them to check periodically to make sure that the measures you have taken in preventing frozen pipes worked and that nothing has ruptured.

In the event you experience water damage due to a burst pipe call TEAM WOLFE, we'll make it "Like it never even happened."

House Fire Statistics and How to Avoid Them

Home Fires Lead The Way In Property Losses

Residential homes are the leading types of property losses. We broke down the facts and figures surrounding house fires and property loss nationwide. House fire property claims are also some of the most common and expensive in the United States according to the Insurance Information Institute.

According to the United States Fire Administration, residential buildings are the leading property type for fire deaths, injuries, and property losses. Here are just a few figures surrounding house fires and property loss nationwide. There are many more factors that cause fire but here are just 4 to name a few:

• According to the National Fire Protection Association An estimated $8 Billion dollars of property loss from house fires occurred in 2018.

• It's estimated that 49% of house fires were caused by cooking from 2013 to 2017 according to the NFPA.

• According to the U.S. Fire Administration, the estimated number of residential fires that occurred nationwide in 2018 were 379,600. That's a whole lot of fires!

• Every year, 48%of Thanksgiving Day house fires occur between the hours of 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M., according to the U.S. Fire Administration. Over 50% of all fires in 2018 were directly caused by cooking!

Reducing Your Risk of Becoming Part Of The Stats

There are many things you can do to help prevent a potential fire at your home. We suggest you put together a checklist of all potential hazards in your home and inspect those items on a regularly schedules basis.

Here are just a few items you should check regularly to get you started on creating your own checklist:

• Make sure your HVAC is in good working condition. You should have this inspected annually by a Heating and Air professional.

• The easiest way to avoid a house fire is by checking your smoke alarms/detectors on a regularly scheduled basis. There is a little button on it that you can press to test it. If it beeps weakly, then you need to change the batteries ASAP. It's a good habit to change the batteries during daylight savings time annually.

•  Keep your stove and oven clean and free of grease and buildup of food particles. Never leave your kitchen unattended while your cooking! It only takes a few seconds for a fire to break out. If you have to leave the kitchen for any reason, turn off the burners before you leave the room.

If for whatever reason you can’t turn off the oven, call someone into the kitchen to watch the food until you get back.

• Make sure that electrical cords are in good condition and are not frayed or chewed by the family pet. If you do notice damaged wires, replace them as soon as possible because this is a huge fire hazard. Never use a cord the is damaged.

• Fire Extinguishers are your best defense weapon when a fire breaks out. You want to make sure you have one in every room that is a potential threat, such as the kitchen or laundry room. Every family member should know how to use an extinguisher so if a fire does happen, it can be put out as fast as possible.

In the event at fire strikes your home, call the cleanup specialists at SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy at (618) 667-8648. We promise to put your home back to it's preloss condition "Like it never even happened."

Has Your Sprinkler System Been Tested Lately?

1/18/2021 (Permalink)

a sprinkler head with water coming out of it Sprinkler Head

Water-based fire protection systems, or fire sprinklers, should be kept in excellent working condition and tested periodically to ensure maximum fire suppression capacity especially, during the winter months when falling temperatures can put these systems under a strain. Your sprinklers are your home's or business’s first line of defense in the event of a fire, and it may be mandatory with the continuous updating of building codes to conduct routine tests and inspections.

1. Check the age of your sprinkler system. Modern standards require that sprinkler systems adhere to NFPA 25 requirements, but systems in buildings older than 60 years may be outdated and in need of a full replacement.

2. Check your sprinkler installation. Faulty or defective installation equipment and procedures can lead to sprinkler malfunctions in the event of a fire.

3. Always keep your fire sprinklers clean. Dirty fire sprinklers can lead to obstructions that block the water flow and prevent sprinklers from working correctly, or even from detecting and activating in the event of a fire. Many organizations and inspectors recommend an obstruction inspection every five years.

4. Periodically test your sprinkler functions. Sprinklers can be tested in a variety of ways, including simply testing that they work through routine checks. However, more complex testing such as corrosion testing and hydrostatic testing can uncover additional issues that may not be readily apparent on a simple functional test.

5. Immediately replace defective parts. Because sprinklers are so deeply interconnected, replacing a defective part may require replacing larger sections of the sprinkler system. However, this is highly advisable as a matter of safety to prevent any issues should the sprinklers fail to activate in the event of smoke or fire.

One benefit of fire sprinklers is that fire sprinkler cleanup is usually much less messy than cleanup after fire suppression using stronger means. Sprinklers can make a serious difference in prevention of property losses and safety issues, and should be maintained at all times.

Flood Damage Can Strike Your Metro-East Illinois Property

1/18/2021 (Permalink)

A flooded kitchen with several inches of contaminated flood water Flood Damage

The Madison and St. Clair County, Illinois region is not immune from the threat of flooding and metro-east Illinois is not an exception. Our region experiences waves of heavy rainstorms, the combined strength of which can result in flooding situations. If water fills the lower levels of your home or business due to extended periods of rain, a call to SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy can turn the tide toward recovery.

When a home in the metro-east region suffers flood damage, the inhabitants do not have the luxury of waiting until the water recedes to make decisions. Large quantities of water inside your home’s foundation or basement risk significant harm to your building’s structure and contents. It is crucial that rapid removal of the water occurs, followed by complete drying of floors, walls, ceilings, and other building components. Our teams of flood damage specialists train for the opportunity to complete these tasks for you.

Flood damage is a water event that requires professional help. A bucket and mop or shop vacuum are not up to the challenge. The sheer amount of water quickly overwhelms any do it yourself attempt. The experienced technicians from SERVPRO employ powerful, industrial strength pumps and extractors to evacuate the water fast. Speed is critical because of the progressive nature of water damage.

Many structures, items, and surfaces can emerge nearly good as new if water does not have the chance to soak into and begin the process of disintegration. Although building materials like finished wood, concrete or cinder block may be able to shed water without much change, drywall, insulation, ceiling tiles, carpeting, and other porous components risk swelling, crumbling, and delamination if soaked for any period of time.

SERVPRO technicians learn dozens of targeted strategies to quickly and successfully remove water from you place of business or home. Once the obvious water is gone, the crew uses high-efficiency fans and dehumidifiers to complete the job, drawing residual moisture out of contents and structure.

If severe weather threatens your property with flood damage, SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy is ready to help you recover from this catastrophe completely. One call to (618) 667-8648 sets a process in motion that returns your home to you "Like it never even happened."

Minimizing Secondary Roof Damage After A Storm

12/31/2020 (Permalink)

a home with a blue tarp secured to the damaged roof. Roof Damage from a storm.

When it comes to severe weather events like Thunderstorms along with high winds in the metro-east Illinois region, these conditions are often the leading cause of structural damage to residential property and local businesses. While prevention and routine inspections are extremely helpful to avoiding a roof leak, sometimes mother nature is still often too powerful to avoid her visiting your home or business with a major blow to your property. If during or right after a catastrophic storm event causes damages to your roof, getting it taken care of immediately is necessary to avoid extensive water damage remediation and repairs. If the storm was big enough, unfortunately, you may not get instant relief.

Temporary Repairs:
Temporary fixes should be made to ensure the damage doesn’t spread. These include:

Tarps – Simple, inexpensive and easy, waterproof tarps can do wonders to keep more moisture from getting inside the property. From the interior of the building, since it is unsafe to walk on a wet roof, smooth the tarp out and attach it, ensuring the entire area is covered.

Caulk, Temporary Roof Patch – For small leaks, a little caulk or sealant can block the water from coming in. Even though it may be small, it can easily become a much bigger problem if not addressed immediately. These products can be found at your local home improvement store.

Replace Shingles – Depending on the structure, a roof leak often is a result of missing shingles or ones that are cracked or becoming unattached. Once it safe to go on the roof, it is important to repair or replace shingles to limit the damage. Loose shingles shout be smoothed and shifted back into place before being nailed or stapled. If shingles are missing but there are no replacements available, sheet metal or wood can be used as a temporary fix.

Professional Help
While these fixes are designed to limit the spread of damage, they are not permanent repairs. Regardless of the size of the leak, contacting a professional like SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy to inspect and repair the roof is vital to maintaining its longevity and protecting what it covers. Our company is a full service contractor so one call to SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy is all you need to do. We handle all aspects of the restoration and repairs needed to restore your property to its preloss condition.

A roof leak is a hassle, but it can quickly become much more than that if gone unchecked. Taking immediate action and getting it properly repaired are keys to avoiding damage to the rest of the structure.

Winter Is Coming, Avoid Frozen Pipes!

12/16/2020 (Permalink)

a frozen water line with a split in it due expansion along with SERVPRO Logo and the words; "Frozen Pipes Frozen Water Line

Winter is upon us in Illinois and with that is temperatures start to plummet. So is the risk of your pipes freezing and bursting during this season. In fact, burst pipes are one of the most common causes of property damage during frigid weather and can cause thousands in water damage—easily $5,000 or more, according to the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety.

The pipes most at risk are those in unheated interior spaces such as basements, attics, and garages. Pipes running through cabinets or exterior walls can freeze also. The good news is there are some simple things you can do to keep your water running and your house dry.

Pipe insulation can cost as little as 50 cents per linear foot at your local hardware store according to the IBHS. So for not much more than the cost of the aspirin you’d need, you can avoid the headaches of cleanup, loss of precious keepsakes, and the cost of your insurance deductible. Use the pipe insulation liberally to protect any vulnerable pipes.

Both the IBHS and the American Red Cross, which is in the business of emergency preparedness, have useful advice on how to prevent your pipes from freezing, as well as how to thaw them if they do.

When winter temperatures fall below freezing our phone volume goes up at SERVPRO due to frozen water lines bursting causing quite a lot of water damage. Many times this costly damage could of been prevented with some easy preventive maintenance steps.

1. As previously mentioned, pipe wrap to insulate the expose piping in the basement of your home.

2. Seal/insulate all small cracks and openings in your basement. Wires and pipes run inside/out of homes and could leave small open spaces which will permit freezing wind to directly affect an area of pipe. That area could freeze and burst. This again is a simply and cost efficient way to keep the heat inside and the cold out.

3. During sub-zero temperatures, let susceptible faucets slowly drip. Running water through the pipes will prevent it from freezing. Also, open cabinet doors under the sinks to allow the home heat to circulate underneath. Again, a few degrees can make a tremendous difference.

SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy is here to help with  all your fire, water & smoke cleanup and restoration needs. We are here for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!

Ladder Safety 101

12/2/2020 (Permalink)

a worker climbing down a ladder and a SERVPRO Logo with the words Ladder Safety in the picture Safe Ladder Handling

When it comes to climbing ladders please consider the safety risk involved before climbing up. Falls from portable and extension ladders are one of the leading causes of occupational injuries and fatalities. The following is a list of safety tips and guidelines to make sure you, and everyone around you, stay safe.

  • Make sure you read and follow the instructions on the ladder, pay close attention to weight limits to whatever ladder you are getting ready to scale.

  • Look for overhead power lines before moving the ladder. Don’t use metal ladders near power lines or exposed energized electrical equipment.

  • Always do an inspection on your ladder before use. If something is broken or bent, either replace it, or get it repaired. If it’s a commercial ladder, make sure you tag it and pull it off line so another co-worker doesn’t grab it and use it.

  • You should always keep a 3-point contact when climbing (two hands and a foot, or two feet and one hand). Keep your body near the middle of the step and always face the ladder while climbing.

  • Make sure you use the right ladder and accessories for their designed purpose.

  • The ladder must be free of any slippery material on the rungs, steps, or feet.

  • Don’t use the top step/rung of a ladder as a step unless it was designated for that purpose.

  • Use a ladder only on stable/level ground, unless the ladder is secured to prevent displacement.

  • Don’t use boxes, barrels or other unstable bases to gain extra height for the ladder.

  • If the ladder needs moved or shifted, make sure that everyone and equipment is off of it.

  • The proper angle for setting up a ladder is to place its base a quarter of the working length of the ladder from the wall or other vertical surface.

  • If using the ladder in a place where it can get displaced by other work activities, make sure it’s secured.

  • Keep all traffic away from the area around the ladder.

  • Make sure that the locks on the on the extension ladder are properly engaged.

  • Be aware of the weight capacity of the ladder, and don’t exceed the maximum load. You need to take into account your weight and anything you carry on it.

Take a few minutes before getting on your next ladder by doing that inspection, and being mindful of its placement. By following these suggested ideas, serious injury can be prevented.

Have a cleaning project that requires climbing on a ladder? Why not leave the ladder climbing to SERVPRO! Give us a call at (618) 667-8648

What is an Ozone Generator?

11/22/2020 (Permalink)

pictured are types of ozone generators SERVPRO uses. Ozone and Hydroxyl Generators

If you have ever had a fire on your property and had SERVPRO come out to restore, you will know what an ozone generator is. For those who have not, an ozone generator is a machine that charges the air around it creating O3 out of the O2 molecules we breathe.

What We Use Ozone For

The primary function that we use an ozone generator for is the eliminate odors, especially odors caused by fires. We can use this technique of odor removal in many different cases such as, clothing, furniture, and entire rooms no matter the size. While the odor removal works great, there is a downside to using ozone in excess.

Precautions to Ozone

As stated earlier, ozone is different from the air we breathe. This reaction makes O3 poisonous if it is ingested in excess. This is why we close off the area that is being deodorized during the process. You can trust that we take every precaution necessary to keep our customers and employees safe.

If you experience a fire loss, give SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy, SERVPRO of Alton, Edwardsville & Granite City and SERVPRO of Belleville-O'Fallon a call at (618) 667-8648.

SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy can get you back to normal after a kitchen fire

11/17/2020 (Permalink)

a charred ceiling with extensive fire & smoke damage from a fire in a kitchen. Fire Damaged ceiling and walls

Cooking is something that most every person does on daily basis. It is an activity that is so normal, that it is easily forgotten how dangerous it can be. The temperatures required to cook are hot enough to start a fire if left unattended.

According to the NFPA, in 2018 the “United States fire departments responded to an estimated average of 172,100 home structure fires per year started by cooking activities in 2012-2016, or an average of 471 home cooking fires per day. These fires caused an average of 530 civilian deaths, 5,270 reported civilian fire injuries, and $1.1 billion in direct property damage per year.”

As you can see, fire damages not only happen often, they are expensive as well. This is because when a fire occurs it damages much more than just the structure of your home or business. The heat from the fire can change the chemical makeup of food items, textiles, furniture, and much more.

Another variable to consider is the amount of soot that the fire spreads around your home or business. Even a small fire in a small corner of your home or business can spread soot over the entire property. The soot gets into the duct systems and is then cycled through the property by the HVAC system. This is why you should trust our highly trained professionals come in and clean the property properly. At SERVPRO, we have a restore first mindset and will do our best to restore any items affected by fire.

What should be disposed of after a kitchen fire:

  • Nonperishable food items- even though these food items are sealed, the heat from the fire can activate bacteria in the cans or jars causing the food to go bad.
  • Room temperature perishable food items- a sealed refrigerator can keep food safe to eat for up to two hours without power as long as it is left shut. However if when the refrigerator is opened, even within that two hour zone, and a strange odor is present, it would be a good idea to dispose of the items inside.
  • Burnt clothing- all clothing burned by the fire should be disposed of even if it is just barely burned.
  • Cosmetics and medications- carefully sort through and examine cosmetics and medicine. If there are any signs that the container has been compromised, dispose the item.

A reliable rule of thumb after a kitchen fire is to get rid of items stored in cardboard, thin plastic bags, or cloth.

Make a Fire Escape Plan!

11/17/2020 (Permalink)

picture of a hand holding a marker with words being written down along with our SERVPRO logo Make a plan!

Fire can spread rapidly through your home, leaving you as little as one or two minutes to escape safely once the smoke alarm sounds. A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire. Make sure to install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, level and outside each separate sleeping area. Bring everyone in your household together and make a plan. Walk through your home and inspect all possible exits and escape routes.

Consider drawing a floor plan of your home if you have children. This will help them visually see the exits. Make sure to mark two ways out of each room, including windows and doors.

Escape planning tips:

  • Check to make sure the escape routes are clear and doors and windows can be opened easily.
  • Choose an outside meeting place (i.e. neighbor's house, a light post, mailbox, or stop sign) a safe distance in front of your home where everyone can meet after they've escaped. Make sure to mark the location of the meeting place on your escape plan.
  • Go outside to see if your street number is clearly visible from the road. If not, paint it on the curb or install house numbers to ensure that responding emergency personnel can find your home.
  • Have everyone memorize the emergency phone number of the fire department. That way any member of the household can call from a neighbor's home or a cellular phone once safely outside.
  • Once you're out, stay out! Under no circumstances should you ever go back into a burning building. If someone is missing, inform the fire department dispatcher when you call. Firefighters have the skills and equipment to perform rescues.

Fires are dangerous and Team Wolfe wants to make sure you and your family are prepared!

Seasonal traditions like Thanksgiving and Christmas require adjustments to our daily routines as the thermometer drops in the region.  With these changes come unwanted risks including fire hazards from additional holiday lights, candles and cooking.  Below, we list some preventative measures you can take now in order to prepare for the colder seasons.

  • Change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. This process should be completed on an annual basis, preferably at Daylight Savings Time or the beginning of a new season to ensure your home and business is safe and prepared for potential emergencies.
  • Check your heaters and HVAC systems for signs of failure and damage. Heating systems pose a significant threat of fire damage during the fall and winter months, so preparation and HVAC system inspections are critical in order to eliminate the risk of fire or lack of heat in your home. Any space heaters should be also be placed away from items that pose a risk such as clothing.
  • Fireplaces should be inspected annually to ensure they do not pose a risk, and combustible materials should be kept a safe distance away.
  • Clear your roof and gutters of debris that can collect and pose a risk if ignited.
  • Do not leave a fire of any kind unattended.

It's Candle Fire Season!

11/2/2020 (Permalink)

A running diffuser on a coffee table A diffuser is a much safer alternative than a candle.

Be Cautious When Using Candles

Yes, that soft light and aromatic fragrances that fill the room from a lit candle can be an easy way to create the atmosphere that you want in your home. However, candles can also become a safety hazard if they are not used properly. Candle fires are common, but the following tips can help you avoid them.

1. Don’t Leave Burning Candles Unattended:
It may seem like an annoyance to extinguish a candle every time you leave the room. However, leaving it burning could result in a candle fire if something gets too close to the flame or if it burns too low. It is best to blow out candles before going to bed at night, even if the candle is in the same room you sleep in..

2. Keep Them Away From Flammable Items:
When you are using a candle, you should be sure to have the area free of flammable objects. This can include papers as well as fabrics such as curtains and bedding. These types of items should be at least a foot away from any candles that are in use. Flammable liquids should be kept even further away.

3. Keep Them Out of Reach of Pets and Children:
Both children and pets often come with an excess of energy and curiosity. For this reason, it can be easy for them to inadvertently start a candle fire. Keep burning candles in an area that are not within reach of a child or pet, especially unsupervised!

4. Use an Alternative:
Perhaps the easiest way to prevent a is simply not to use candles at all. There are a variety of other ways that you can achieve a more relaxing home environment. If you are only interested in adding a nice scent to your home, a wax warmer is a great option. One great option is a diffuser. Diffusers are a great alternative to candles and make you house smell fantastic!

While these tips can help you prevent an emergency, accidents can still occur. Whether it is small or large, fires often require smoke cleanup and some repairs. If this happens, a fire damage restoration company like SERVPRO can help return your home to its preloss condition making it "Like it never even happened."

Have You Checked Your Gutter System Lately?

10/27/2020 (Permalink)

a roof with clogged gutters from leaves and a baseball Clogged Gutters

Now that we are well into the fall season, SERVPRO wants to remind homeowners about an important functioning item we tend to overlooked each year, your gutters.
Although you may not think about it, the state of your gutters can affect many other areas of your family's property, which includes your roof and foundation. If your gutters fail to function they way they are intended to do they can wreck havoc on your home or business . The most common problem that homeowners face with their gutters is that they fail to drain or channel excess rainwater far enough away from your foundation. That excess water can back up under your home's foundation or into your basement. If rain water doesn't travel through your gutters freely, it's most likely because the gutters are clogged with leaves or debris. This is especially common during this season when trees are dropping their leaves. If you have clogged gutters it can often lead to costly foundation repairs that can cost thousands of dollars. Having your gutters regularly cleaned (at least once or twice a year) can prevent a major water damage from happening to your property.

if you are concerned about your gutters not functioning property, SERVPRO encourages you to have them inspected by a qualified company to avoid any future water damage from gutters that are clogged.

When water backs up into your basement our foundation, it very well may be a gutter system that is not functioning properly. Be sure and call the cleanup team that is "Faster To Any Size Disaster" in the event water damage strikes your home or business.

Staying Safe during a Flood Event

10/27/2020 (Permalink)

Do you know how dangerous flood water can be? A depth of 6 inches can sweep you away, and a depth of 12 inches can sweep your car away. Floods are fast-moving and aggressive, and if you didn’t heed the warnings to evacuate, then you need to know how to stay safe not just during the flood but after.

1. Staying Safe During Flood

During a flood, you should stay in a safe location, and it is best to discuss this location with others so that when/if you need to be rescued your family can give first responders the most accurate information. Your safe place should be an elevated location. If you choose your house, do not go into the enclosed attic. The level you want should have numerous exit points so that the rising waters do not trap you. Additionally, when the flood begins, stay at your designated location. Do not attempt to leave, unless absolutely necessary because you could be at risk of drowning. Essentially, staying safe during a flood comes down to remaining calm and trying to stay above the rising water.

2. Staying Safe After a Flood

Standing flood water can be potentially hazardous. Not only do possible downed power lines present the risk of electrocution, but the water itself may also be contaminated from sewage and other debris. While a building was your sanctuary during the flood, a flooded building now presents serious health risks. If it is not possible to stay in a dry area, it may be wise to wear heavy gloves and boots to prevent contact with any potentially hazardous materials, but it is best to avoid contact if possible. When the time comes, seek out restoration specialists SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy, SERVPRO of Alton, Edwardsville & Granite City, SERVPRO of Belleville-O'Fallon, to restore your home from any lasting water damage and to help with any hazardous cleanup.

Flooding and the resulting flood water are dangerous. It is never wise to ignore a call to evacuate, but it is not always possible to leave. When you must stay behind, it is essential to find high ground and avoid contact with contaminated materials.

Storm Preparedness

10/27/2020 (Permalink)

Storm Preparedness

If you are a homeowner in the Madison County & St. Clair County region, you have probably thought about what might happen if a storm causes your house to flood. Planning is always important where storm safety is concerned, especially if you live in a flood zone. Here are four steps that you can take to prepare your home and family for a potential storm involving flood water.

1. Sign Up for Local Alerts

If your community offers an emergency warning system, sign up for it as soon as you can. Alerts are also provided by the Emergency Alert System and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Weather Radio.

2. Determine Your Flood Risk

Do you live in a flood zone? If you don't know, it may be time to visit the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Flood Map Service Center online to find out. If it turns out that floods are a significant concern in your area, you will likely want to purchase flood insurance for your property.

3. Protect Valuables

Valuables can easily become damaged from flood water. Protect yours by keeping gutters and drains cleared, purchasing a battery-operated sump pump and moving said items to higher levels in your house. Important paperwork should be digitized and stored in a waterproof box to protect it from water damage in a flooded building.

4. Plan Your Escape

Having a smart escape route in place is important when a flood is threatening your home. Put a plan for emergency shelter in place, and practice various escape paths with your family on a regular basis. Having supplies such as batteries and medicine on hand is also very important.

Your first priority with flood water is to get yourself and your loved ones to safety. Your property also matters, but storm damage restoration specialists can typically help you resolve any damage that does occur. Planning ahead of time by following the steps above puts you in a better position to keep your family and your investments safer in a flood-related storm.

Welcoming Spring!

5/11/2020 (Permalink)

We are in the first weeks of Spring, and although it is always good to see the sunshine, hear the birds chirping, and see the grass beginning to turn green, there are some other parts of Spring that we must be prepared for. Here in the Midwest, and in Madison County, we must consider that this time of the year can also bring many storms and rain showers. This can also mean the risk of flooding or tornadoes. While preparing for this potentially rainy season, some things to be aware of are:

  • Have you checked your sump pump?- Sump pump failures can be a cause of many water related emergencies. It is important to check that your sump pump is working properly, plugged in, and has a working battery backup if it has that feature.
  • Your insurance coverage – Check your insurance coverage to see what would be considered a coverable loss. Consider making any changes to your insurance policy that you think might be necessary. It is always a good idea to be knowledgeable and prepared in case an emergency happens.
  • Have an updated home inventory – While this can feel like an overwhelming task, it can be an invaluable resource in in the case of an emergency. There are many apps that are available to help you create a running list of the items that you have in your household. This list can help immensely in the event that you need to ever file an insurance claim. Another way to record items in your house is to record a video of each room in your house. Don’t forget to include areas such as closets or in drawers.  Be sure to include serial numbers when applicable and ensure that the video is backed up somewhere that you can access it remotely if needed.
  • Have an emergency plan prepared for you and your family – This may include such as things as having copies of important papers such as insurance or medical information backed up and stored in a safe place, having an idea of where your family and pets could go in an emergency, and having a list of emergency contacts prepared. Knowing this information and being prepared can lessen panic and help to ease the chaos that an emergency situation may bring.

All of us at SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy are wishing you a safe and dry spring season. However, if you should be affected by spring storms or any other emergency, our experienced team is available 24/7. Contact our office at any time at 618-667-8648.

Why do Sump Pumps Fail?

5/3/2020 (Permalink)

Spring has sprung, and while we always hope that will mean sunny skies and warm weather, we in the Midwest know that that can also bring rainstorms and lots of wet weather. Many households in Madison County have sump pumps to help prevent flooding in rainy weather or in even in the case of other types of flooding. A sump pump typically kicks on when water is detected in an area and diverts that water to somewhere that it can safely drain. There are many different parts and variables to a sump pump, and if one of those is not working correctly, the entire system can fail. Some other thoughts to consider for sump pump safety are -

  • Installation – It is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully while installing a sump pump. Improper installation can void the warranty and potentially cause your sump pump to fail.
  • Maintenance- It is important to check your sump pump 3-4 times a year to ensure that it is still working properly. It may also be helpful to check on it before the start of a rainy season or if a large rainstorm or other weather event is predicted. This helps to ensure that your pump will be working and ready to go when you may need it most.
  • Power outage – Sump pumps typically do not have their own power system and are plugged into the homes power supply, so if the power goes out, the sump pump also shuts off. Some things to consider are to purchase a sump pump with a battery backup system, a sump pump that has an emergency alarm that will alert you if there is no power to the sump pump, or having a backup generator that can supply power in the case of an outage.
  • Ensure that your sump pump is the correct size for the space – It is important to choose the correct size sump pump for the area it is being used for. It may be useful to consult with a professional in order to ensure that the sump pump you choose will be efficient for your home or business. A pump that is too large may have to overwork to adjust for less water being drained and wear out more quickly. One that is too small will likely not be able to keep up with the amount of water produced.

If you have any questions or concerns about water damage in your Collinsville home or business, call SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy at 618-667-8648. Our friendly and experienced team is available 24/7 because we know that emergencies can happen at any time.

Let's talk about Sump Pumps!

1/13/2020 (Permalink)

A sump pump can be an effective tool for preventing water damages. They are a water pump that you can place in your basement, crawl space, window wells, or anywhere that could possibly collect water in a bad rainstorm, flood, or even in the case of leaking pipes or appliances. Typically, you place the sump pump in a recessed area or the lowest point of your home or basement in order to automatically pump out any water that may accumulate.

Most sump pumps have a float on them that detects the amount of water coming into the pump. Once the level of water reaches a certain point, the float will trigger the pump to turn on and begin pumping out and draining the water. While there are both automatic and manual types of sump pumps, typically the automatic ones are recommended since they are constantly running in case of quick build ups of water. The manual pumps require someone to turn them on in order for them to work.

Some things to look for while considering a sump pump for your home are:

  • Ensure that the pump is correctly sized for your home or property
  • Consider a sump pump with an emergency alarm. This will notify you in case of pump failure, loss of power, or low batteries.
  • Choose a pump made of sturdy materials that will hold up for a long period of time.
  • Ensure that the pump you choose has a cord that will reach the nearest outlet and is compatible with your outlets in your home.
  • Consider a pump with a battery backup option in case of power loss

Here at SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy we hope that you and your home stay safe and dry! If you have any questions about water damages or any other cleaning or restoration related needs, please contact our office at 618-667-8648.

Signs that you may need a new water heater

12/29/2019 (Permalink)

A water heater is a critical household appliance, especially in the winter months. It provides hot water for showers, washing dishes, laundry, and so much more. It is important to stay aware of the condition of your hot water heater so that you and your Madison County home never get left with cold water. A leaking or damaged hot water heater can also cause water damage and significant damage to your home or property. Some signs that you can look for may be:

  • Unusual noises – Typically a water heater makes some noises that would just become routine to hear, you may not notice them on a daily basis. However, if you hear anything unusual such as banging or clanging sounds, creaks or whines you should contact a repair person right away. This could be a sign that the heating element on the hot water heater is wearing out and unable to keep up with the demand of the hot water supply.
  • Rust around the base of the hot water heater – This could be a sign that your tank is leaking or beginning to gather moisture. Catching this problem early on could help you to avoid a water damage.
  • Variance in the temperature of your water- Is your water too hot? Not hot enough? This could be a sign that your water heater needs repaired or replaced. It may just need repairs or a part replaced, but it is always a good idea to have the entire unit checked for leaks or other potential problems at the same time.
  • Hard water – If you live in an area known for hard water, and experience one or more of these signs you may have sediment gathered in the bottom your hot water tank. This would require the tank to be flushed to remove the sediment. If the problem is not treated, then the motor on your hot water tank could quit working or burn out.

If you have any questions about water damages, or the restoration process, call SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy at 618-667-8648. Our friendly and qualified team is available 24/7.

Winter Weather Alerts

12/28/2019 (Permalink)

The weather can change quickly and go from being warm and sunny one day, to overcast and snowing the next. It is important to keep an eye on the weather reports in order to be properly prepared for the day.  Weather alerts can be confusing as there are many different technical terms and meanings. At SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy we want you stay safe and ahead of any weather events that may occur. Below, we are going to talk about some of the different weather warning messages you may see.

  • Winter Weather Advisory – An advisory occurs when less than 6 inches of snow or less than ¼ an inch of ice is expected to accumulate. It is still very important to stay updated on the weather and to be prepared because an advisory can quickly turn into a winter storm warning.
  • Winter Storm Warning – A winter storm warning is issued when 6 inches or more of snow is expected, or a combination of winter weather such as snow, ice, sleet, or high winds may occur.
  • Blizzard Warning –  A blizzard warning will occur when winds of over 35mph are predicted for more than three hours at a time along with lots of snow fall or snow that has already fallen that could blow around and reduce visibility.
  • Ice Storm Warning – This occurs when ¼ an inch of more of ice is expected to accumulate.
  • Wind Chill – This is more than just the temperature outside, this is talking about how cold it is with the moving air of the wind. It is typically colder than the temperature outside so it's important to look at both the temperature and the wind chill.
  • Wind Chill Advisory – A wind chill advisory is when the wind chill is –15 degrees to –25 degrees. The winds must also be 10mph or higher.
  • Wind Chill Warning – A wind chill warning means that the wind chill is over –25 degrees and the winds are 10mph or higher.

Warning signs of Water Damage

12/15/2019 (Permalink)

Flood waters. Leaking roofs. Burst pipes. Leaky or malfunctioning appliances such as dishwashers, air conditioners, or water heaters. Though these problems are all different, they have one thing in common. They all can cause water damage and destruction of property.

Water damage can be caused with a small amount of water or a large amount. It can also be caused by damp air or humidity. Due to this, there are times when water damage occurs when there is no or very little visible signs of water in the area. These are some of the warning signs to look for that may show you that there is water damage occurring.

  • Damp or rainy weather that is persistent. This can cause an excess of moisture in the air, and the rain can cause flooding to occur.
  • Standing water that is reoccurring in any area of your home.
  • Leaks or drips in plumbing, hoses, or appliances. These can leak slowly over time which will both cause damage and raise you water bill.
  • Bad smells. Mold and bacteria that comes from water damage may result in stale, musty odor.
  • Stains or spots. Water damage may cause spots or mold stains on walls or ceilings. You may also notice peeling or flaking paint.
  • Uneven surfaces. Water damage may cause surfaces such as walls, floors, or ceilings to bend or warp.

If you see any of these signs or have any questions or concerns about water damage please contact our experienced team at SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy at 618-667-8648.

Keeping your pets safe in an emergency.

12/8/2019 (Permalink)

While developing an emergency plan for your family, it is important to consider the safety of your pets as well. Disasters such as storms, fires, earthquakes, tornadoes, or floods can also affect your pets. There are many different ways that you can prepare your pets for an emergency.

  1. Place a sticker by your front door with all of your pet's information on it. This can include their name, breed, medical information, and any other information that may be needed. If an evacuation ever occurs, you can mark down on the sticker that your pets have been evacuated to alert rescuers.
  1. Ensure that pets can be identified. Attach a physical tag to their collar and ensure that current contact information is included on it. Consider microchipping your pets. This will allow a veterinarian or other rescue group to identify your pet and retrieve your contact information if your pet gets separated from you or lost.
  1. Have an emergency bag prepared with food, water, bowls, and a leash for your pets. Also consider including any medicines or first aid items they may need.
  1. In case of an emergency or natural disaster, be aware of what emergency shelters, kennels and/or vets in the area may accept pets. This list could also include hotels that accept pets or family friends that may be willing to provide care for them.

At SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy, we want to ensure that your entire family, including pets stay safe. Having an emergency plan prepared, staying aware, and having a bag packed may help to keep your pets safe and more comfortable in case of an emergency.

Flooded Warehouse

6/11/2019 (Permalink)

Of all of the disasters that could happen to a home or a business, floods are the most unpredictable, because of the damage they can cause. Depending on how bad the flood is, a home or business owner may be able to salvage there structure by disposing of furniture, carpets and drywall. However some floods can do as much as tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in repair cost. Unfortunately, some flood damage is not covered by your insurance company.

When you have a flood in your home or business, such as a flooded warehouse, it's important to have  the structure dried out and cleaned as soon as possible. The longer the structure stays wet, the more of a chance of mold growth.

When flooding happens in Collinsville, Troy, or the surrounding areas, it's best to have a SERVPRO Franchise Professional come and properly dispose of any damaged contents, and properly dry out the area and sanitize. And make it, "Like it never even happened."

Important Tips for Recovering After Roof Damage

5/31/2019 (Permalink)

If high winds or hail damage your roof in Troy IL , you’re probably wondering what to do next. Storm cleanup and restoration companies may simplify the process because of their experience in handling all the details of this kind of disaster. Here are four steps the experts can help with to make your roof repair less stressful.

  1. Protect the Affected Areas

One of the most pressing worries after roof damage occurs is preventing further property destruction. While more permanent solutions can take time, covering the affected areas with a tarp is a quicker fix. It can help protect your house from the elements while the rest of the repairs take place.

  1. Remove Water and Dry Absorbent Materials

Next, the experts can use specialized equipment such as pumps and wet/dry vacuums to remove any standing water. Then comes the crucial step of drying any porous building materials such as drywall and wood. Industrial-strength dehumidifiers and high-speed air movers help with this step, which can prevent the contents from swelling, warping, or becoming moldy.

  1. Complete Restorations

Technicians can also complete or coordinate all necessary reparations. These include simpler things such as repainting the walls as well as more complex jobs such as drywall replacement, floor installation, and roof repair.

  1. Call Your Insurance Company

Whenever your home suffers from storm or wind damage, it can also be important to call your insurance company. An agent will likely ask questions about the extent of the problem to determine the company’s next steps. Cleanup and restoration companies encounter insurance companies' questions regularly and may be able to help you answer them more thoroughly.

When storms harm your rooftop, the cleanup and restoration can be complicated and time-consuming. Hiring professionals to help with everything from the water removal to the roof repair can lessen your workload and help guarantee your home is as close to its pre-damage state as possible.

Commercial Flooding

5/30/2019 (Permalink)

Water intrusion in commercial buildings can damage high-value equipment like computers and building services such as HVAC, lighting, elevators and security equipment. Common long-term consequences of water damage; like the growth of toxic mold, may be even more problematic than in a home due to the larger occupancy of a business or commercial enterprise. When a greater number of people with a wider range of sensitivity are exposed to mold and bacteria spores, health impacts may be significantly magnified, perhaps leading to an enforced closure of the facility until the situation is fully remediated.

Nobody is ever ready for a flood especially at work! Water intrusion may be more severe in commercial buildings than in a residential setting, and the effects more extensive. Many commercial structures have a larger volume water entering the premises through plumbing supply lines, and at a higher water pressure. The quantity of outgoing sewage is greater than a typical residence, as well. Also, commercial buildings tend to be of larger square footage than a home, so entry points for water intrusion through areas like the roof, exterior walls or windows are commensurately greater in number.

Typical issues from water intrusion in the commercial environment include:

  • Water from roof leaks penetrating through ceilings. Chronic leakage through the roof may proceed unnoticed for long periods, hidden by suspended ceiling panels or in electrical or HVAC service areas above.
  • Ruptures of water supply lines typically release clean (white) water.  Sewage backups or leaks in drain pipes release toxic (black) water that may be a biohazard and require evacuation of the premises.
  • Flooding from external sources can result from heavy rains, storms such as hurricanes, rapid snow melt or local overflowing lakes or rivers.
  • Moisture intrusion through the building envelope is typically more subtle. Humid outdoor air may be drawn in through structural cracks and gaps. Over a period, chronic dampness forms in spaces like wall voids, unventilated attics and service areas, spawning hidden mold growth that persists unseen.

For professional remediation of water intrusion in commercial buildings and secondary damage such as mold growth, contact SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy at 618-667-8648.

Storm Safety Tips for You and Your Employees

5/29/2019 (Permalink)

During thunderstorm season in the Collinsville Troy area it is likely that your employees will be at work when a storm hits at some point. Having an emergency plan and proper maintenance of the property can keep everyone safe until the storm passes. Here are some safety tips to use if storms interrupt your workday.

Have an Emergency Kit

Every commercial property should have an emergency kit. You could lose power or be stranded during the storm, so it's important to be prepared. A good emergency kit should contain:

  • Bottled water
  • Non-perishable snacks
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Battery-operated radio
  • First aid kit
  • Emergency contact numbers

You may never need to use your kit. It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Go to the Emergency Area

Designate an area in the building where employees know to gather if a storm hits. Ideally, it will be in an interior part of the building where you can rely on solid walls to provide protection. High winds can throw debris through windows or skylights, so try to steer clear of places with lots of glass during a storm. You can hire a SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy to clean, repair or replace damaged parts of your building after the storm, but people are irreplaceable.

Maintain External Features

Well-manicured trees and shrubberies are less likely to break and cause problems during a storm. Keep trees trimmed so that they resist winds more readily. Lightning rods were probably installed on your building when it was constructed. They should be inspected on a regular basis and maintained so that, when they are needed, they do the job they were designed to do.

A storm may interrupt the day, but with the proper precautions, it doesn't have to disrupt lives. By following these tips, you can keep yourself and your employees safe if a storm is in your area.

Flood Water Tips

5/21/2019 (Permalink)

During this time of year, we see a lot of rain in the Madison County area. Across the United States though, flooding is one of the most commonly widespread weather-related disasters. Whether your home or business is in the country, in town or near a river  there is always potential for flood damage Though you may have never experienced a flood in the past, there’s no level of security to assure that you will not in the future. Did you know that 20% of all claims paid by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) were for policies in low-risk communities?  According to the American Red Cross (ARC), floods cause more damage in the U.S. every year than any other weather-related disaster.  The ARC offers the following safety tips:

Stay away from floodwaters

If you approach a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around, and go another way.  Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off of your feet.

Driving on a flooded road

Turn around and go another way.  If you are caught on a flooded road and water are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground.  Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.

Keep children out of the water

They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water.

SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy is prepared to handle any size disaster. Call SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy at 618-667-8648 for flood cleanup. Always be prepared and ready. Even minor floods have the potential to cause major damage to a structure when not treated quickly and properly, and the cleanup is often an overwhelming task. SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy is prepared to handle any size disaster. The quicker work begins; the earlier your home or business can return to “Like it never even happened.”

Steps to Take Immediately After Storm Damage

4/30/2019 (Permalink)

Take Safety Precautions

Heavy winds and rain can create physical hazards such as collapsed roofing materials, window damage, collapsed walls or standing water in the basement or home interior. In addition, moisture can soak into furniture, carpeting, and building materials making the perfect environment for mold growth that can cause health issues. Shut off the main gas line if you smell gas. Beware of broken glass, exposed nails, and other sharp objects on the property. Contact SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy to help do basic tasks to secure your property and make it safe to use. If necessary, arrange for an alternative place for you and your family to live while your property is being restored to safe living condition.

Photograph the Damage

If it is safe to move around your property, use your cellphone or a camera to photograph the damage so that you will have a record for your insurance company. This action will ensure that you are fully compensated.

Contact Your Insurance Company

Contact your insurance agent to notify them about the damage to your home immediately. The company will send out an adjustor to determine the extent of the damage so that payment for repairs can be made.

Look Into Federal Disaster Assistance

The federal government may have declared the area affected by the storm as a disaster area that is eligible for low-cost loans to help restore your property to normal. You will be required to file documents to receive these loans.

When a storm-related disaster strikes, it may seem overwhelming, but these steps can help you to begin the process of restoring your home, and your life, to normal. At SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy, we provide 24-hour emergency disaster service. We specialize in the stabilization and restoration of homes and businesses that have suffered small or large loss from water, flood, wind, storm, fire damage, and smoke disaster.

The owners SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy is proud to have been in business in the St. Clair/Madison county area for over 25 years! The extensive knowledge we’ve gained during that time makes us the go-to disaster restoration company to call. Our experience will enhance your experience with us!

But why SERVPRO? After all, there are other companies who make the same claims. Why not just pick one out of a hat? Well, your property is probably the biggest investment you’ll make in your lifetime, so it’s also very important to have a company with the knowledge, experience and reputation you can trust to return your property to its preloss condition or better and so make your disaster "Like it never even happened."

Fire safety tips

2/26/2019 (Permalink)

In the last few weeks there have been multiple fires in the surrounding areas and I wanted to take this time to remind everyone to be prepared by following the fire safety guidelines listed below:

  • Everyone in your household should help make a plan. Walk through your home and inspect all possible exits and escape routes.
  • A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire. Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home.
  • Everyone in the household must understand the escape plan. When you walk through your plan, check to make sure the escape routes are clear and doors and windows can be opened easily.
  • Choose an outside meeting place a safe distance in front of your home where everyone can meet after they've escaped.
  • If there are infants or family members with mobility limitations, make sure that someone is assigned to assist them in the fire drill and in the event of an emergency. Assign a backup person too, in case the designee is not home during the emergency.
  • If windows or doors in your home have security bars make sure that the bars have emergency release devices inside so that they can be opened immediately in an emergency. Emergency release devices won't compromise your security - but they will increase your chances of safely escaping a home fire.
  • Tell guests or visitors to your home about your family's fire escape plan. When staying overnight at other people's homes, ask about their escape plan. If they don't have a plan in place, offer to help them make one. This is especially important when children are permitted to attend "sleepovers" at friends' homes.
  • Be fully prepared for a real fire: when a smoke alarm sounds, get out immediately.
  • Once you're out, stay out! Under no circumstances should you ever go back into a burning building. If someone is missing, inform the fire department dispatcher when you call. Firefighters have the skills and equipment to perform rescues.

1/28/2019 (Permalink)

When the temperatures drop prepare your home or business to prevent your pipes from freezing. If your pipes freeze the chance of them bursting is much greater. Here are a few tips to help prevent your pipes from freezing.

  • Keep garage and exterior doors closed as much as possible.
  • Make sure no cold air is leaking through your windows or doors.
  • Keep your thermostat set to the same temperature during the day and night.
  • If you will be going away for a few days or more keep the heat running and set no lower than 55 degrees.

Assessing your water damage.

1/15/2019 (Permalink)

Flooded basement due to a pipe leak.

A water damage happens when a pipe breaks, plumbing backs up, flood waters rise, or a number of other reasons in which water enters a structure.

Water restoration is the act of making it "Like it never even happened." which is our specialty at SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy.

Many homeowners who experience a water damage often don't know where to start. The first step is assessing the situation and responding appropriately.

There are two criteria for categorizing water damages: Class, and Category.

The Class of water damage refers to the extent of damage and how much moisture has been soaked up (or bound) in the building material.

There are 4 Classes of water damages:

Class 1 - water is confined to a small area and materials absorb very little water.

Class 2 - where wet materials represent approximately 5-40% of combined floor, wall, and ceiling surface area in a space

Class 3 - wet materials represent more than 40% surface area

Class 4 - this class of damage is a special case where water has been deeply absorbed into the structure and special methods need to be employed beyond a regular drying plan.

Category refers to the level of contamination caused by the water:

Category 1 - originates from a sanitary source, meaning a supply line or sink overflow with no contaminants

Category 2 - water that contains some contaminants such as washing machine or dishwasher rinse water

Category 3 - this includes all water that is significantly contaminated and can cause illness if ingested. This would include sewage, standing water with microbial growth, or water from a toilet containing fecal matter

If you have a water damage that needs to be assessed and for help with the cleanup call SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy at 618-667-8648

Pipe burst floods home.

12/10/2018 (Permalink)

View from the front door. Water was flowing throughout the whole house.

This family came home from vacation to find their home flooded. The pipe for their kitchen sink busted and water was flowing for roughly 2-5 days. Serious damaged occurred to this newly built home. The upstairs flooring started buckling and the basement ceiling drywall had fallen.

When we arrived on site the CSR did a walk through to determine what all needed done. The crew began extracting all the water and removing the carpet. Our next step was to remove the ceilings in the basement, all flooring, start drying out contents and setting equipment to prevent mold growth.

A disaster like this can be prevented by turning your water off when you leave for vacation. Many never think it will happen to them. But if it does you can always count on us to be there!

Holiday Safety Tips.

12/7/2018 (Permalink)

We all enjoy lights during the holiday season but beware of the possible danger.

Holiday lighting poses a real fire risk if not used safely. So before you finish the

holiday decorating, be sure to check out these holiday lights safety tips:

Christmas Trees

Many artificial trees are fire resistant. If you buy one, look for a statement specifying this protection

A fresh tree will stay green longer and be less of a fire hazard than a dry tree

Use only Christmas tree lights that are rated for indoor use and tested for safety. Check for the label of an independent testing laboratory like Underwriters’ Laboratory (UL).

If you have a metallic Christmas tree, never put electric lights on it to avoid the risk of electric shock.

Before using lights, check each set of lights for worn or broken cords, broken or cracked sockets, and loose bulb connections. Replace damaged lights.

Connect no more than three standard-size sets of lights into an extension cord. Don’t overload electrical outlets or extension cords, instead plug lights into different circuits around your home.

Don’t fasten colored spotlights onto metallic trees. Use them above or beside your tree to prevent tree branches from becoming charged with electricity from faulty lights.

Turn off the all Christmas lights and decorations when going to bed or leaving home.

Keep pets safe by protecting electric cords and tree lights so that they can’t chew them and get electrocuted.

Outdoor Lights

Make sure outdoor lights are rated for exterior use by an independent testing laboratory. Exterior lights and extension cords used outdoors need to be weather-resistant.

Fasten outdoor lights securely to trees, house, walls or other firm support to protect from wind damage. However, don't attach light strings with nails or staples as these can cut through the wire insulation and start a fire. Use only UL-approved hangers.

The tree can become charged with electricity from faulty lights, and any person touching a branch could be electrocuted! To avoid this danger, use colored spotlights above or beside a tree, never fastened onto it!

Take exterior lights down within 90 days to prevent hazards from weather damage or animals chewing on them.

Store lights safely after taking them down. Tangled lights can lead to damaged cords and broken sockets. They can be difficult to untangle! Wrap the strings around a piece of cardboard, cover them in paper or fabric, and then store in a sturdy container until next year.

Candles

Never use real candles to decorate a tree. Use battery-operated, flame-less LED candles instead.

If you do use real candles, follow these candle fire safety guidelines:

Use only non-flammable candle holders.

Place candles where they can’t be knocked down or blown over.

Keep candles away from any flammable objects like decorations or drapes.

Never burn candles near trees or greenery.

Never leave a burning candle unattended. .

Keep safe this Holiday season.  SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy is always here to help

Common causes for house fires.

10/4/2018 (Permalink)

House fires are more common during the colder season. Between 2011 and 2015, the U.S fire departments responded to an average of 358,000 house fires per year. Cooking is one main cause of house fires and injuries. Frying and unattended cooking are the main reasons for cooking fires. Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter are three big Holidays when most house fires occur.

When planning and prepping for a party people tend to get overwhelmed and distracted. They will forget something is in the oven, leave a burner on, or a put a towel to close to the stoves flame. Try to be more focused while cooking. Designate someone to keep an eye on the food at all times. Have a fire extinguisher close by and check all smoke alarms as well.

Be prepared and safe next time you are cooking a big meal! SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy is here to help if you experience a cooking fire!

Flooded basement from a hot water pipe.

7/31/2018 (Permalink)

This flooded basement was caused by a pin size hole in a hot water pipe.

Sometimes the most unexpected disaster can happen in your home. We received a call for a flooded basement. When our CSR arrived on scene, he noticed there was a pin size hole in the customers hot water pipe. This pipe had to have been leaking for a few days. The basement had about an inch deep of water.

Our crew turned the water off and immediately started extracting the water. Unfortunately the steam and the time period it was leaking caused mold to start growing. We removed the damaged dry wall, ceiling tiles and cleaned all affected areas.

Mold can grow quickly and from the smallest leak. If you notice any kind of moisture in your home it is best to get it taken care of quickly.

Is your family prepared for a power outage?

Emergency kit

We have experienced a few storms in the last month. Those storms have caused many homes to lose power for minutes to days. Are you prepared if you lose power? Being prepared for a storm will keep you less stressed when the storm hits. Depending on how bad the storm is you may be on your own for a while. Meaning you will need to have your own food, water, flash lights and more. Decide on a designated spot for your emergency kit and also a designated area for everyone in your home to meet during a storm. Check your kit often to make sure batteries are still good, the food hasn’t expired or anything is missing.

The following is a list of items that are suggested to keep on hand:

  1. Flashlights for each family member
  2. Battery-operated radio and clock
  3. Extra batteries
  4. Containers of bottled water
  5. Canned, freeze-dried or dehydrated food, powdered milk, baby supplies for infants
  6. Non-electric can opener
  7. List of important phone numbers
  8. First-aid kit

Keep food on hand that does not require you to cook. Here is a general list of food ideas to stock up on:

  • Store at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food.
  • Choose foods your family will eat.
  • Remember any special dietary needs.
  • Avoid foods that will make you thirsty.
  • Choose salt-free crackers, whole grain cereals and canned foods with high liquid content.
  • Ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits, vegetables and a can opener
  • Protein or fruit bars
  • Dry cereal or granola
  • Peanut butter
  • Dried fruit
  • Nuts
  • Crackers
  • Canned juices
  • Non-perishable pasteurized milk
  • High energy foods
  • Food for infants

Stay safe in this extreme heat!

7/5/2018 (Permalink)

Lately the weather has been very dry, hot and humid. We have been on a heat advisory as well. Extreme heat is when the temperature is above 90 degrees for two to three days. During extreme heat evaporation is slowed and the body works harder to maintain normal body temperature.

Using these tips will help keep you cool and safe during this horrible heat.

  • Wearing light and loose clothing will keep you cooler. Dark tight-fitting clothing will trap in the rays; keeping the heat in.
  • Drink more water! Try to stay away from caffeine and alcohol as well.
  • Avoid high-energy activities and get help when doing hard manual work outside
  • Keep your home cooler by covering all windows with drapes or shades, using weather-strips on all windows and doors, and using an attic fan if you have one.

Check often on your elderly, neighbors and pets. This heat can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat strokes. Staying hydrated and cool will less your chance from any heat illness.

SERVPRO wants everyone to continue to have a fun, cool and safe summer!!

Cleaning up a birds nest in an attic.

6/8/2018 (Permalink)

Now that's a birds nest!

Our office received a call about a five foot birds nest in an attic. Now we weren't really thinking we would find a five foot birds nest in an office attic; but sure enough there was! As you can see in this photo the customer was not exaggerating. The bird or birds had to have building that nest for a while. If you find any kind of nest in your attic do not move anything or touch it. You can release the spores or whatever else is in the nest and cause you and your coworkers to be at risk of getting sick.

Did you know SERVPRO removes/cleans up after birds or animals? Our crews will come in and remove the nest, feces, insulation and sanitize anything that was affected by the bird or animal.

If you have a pest problem and need a good cleaning give our office a call!

Conditions In Madison County Might Be Right For Mold

5/31/2018 (Permalink)

It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, there are certain species of mold that can cause health effects for some people.

If the right conditions exist, mold will grow.  Those conditions include:

  • Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
  • Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
  • Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.

Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a prime target for mold growth.

If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mold in your home or business.
